Throughout the course of the unit the students have had many informal and formal assessments. They start right off the bat to getting a genetic current event paper/presentaiton that they have a week to prepare for. They have questions for homework in which they have to reflect on what we did in class that particular day. For the second lesson, students filled in their graphic organizer to show the process of replication. For their third lesson, they had a pre-lab quiz, they also had questions to answer while they were conducting their lab which were used to guide and promote student thinking but to also assess how well they are getting the information. For the fourth lesson, they watched a transcription/translaton simulatioin then took a quiz at the end of it and had some discussion questions to reflect on those processes. For the fifth lesson, the students presented their current events. They had to find a current event in genetics, summarize it and then reflect on its findings. They had to get up in front of the class and present what they wrote then we had a class discussion about all their articles and their similar/different feelings towards their findings. Next they had an amino acid and jumping codon activities that they completed. They created amino acids and synthesized proteins. For the next lesson they did an inquiry based lab where I gave them expectations and they had to come up with their own procedure while I guided them, after they were finished they had discussion questions to reflect on their thought processes. Finally the students had a biotechnology research paper to write addressing four main points and then as their BIG summative assessment, I took one key point from every class and turned them into short answer essay questions to complete. That way they could reflect on the entire unit.
